Turbulence-induced contact rates of plankton: the question of scale
نویسنده
چکیده
Modelling encounter rates between planktonic predators and prey in turbulent waters requires an estimate of a spatial scale. One spatial scale proposed in the literature based on prey concentration is shown to be systematically inconsistent and its use is shown to imply that plankton sampllng methodology can bias encounter rate estimates in turbulent situations. We show that a scale based on the predator's reactive distance is more appropriate, as it has clear theoretical support, and is consistent with other mathematical treatments of encounter problen~s. Applying the reactive distance as the length scale produces encounter rates for small (e.g. 4 to 10 mm) fish larvae 2to 3-fold lower than those using prey separation distance.

Intermittent turbulence and copepod dynamics: increase in encounter rates through preferential concentration
Turbulence has a strong influence on plankton contact rate, which is a crucial parameter for plankton ecology. In the field of particle-turbulence interactions, it is now well known that fully developed turbulence does not always homogenise particle distributions, but instead creates, in some well-defined conditions, preferential concentrations of heavy particles. Many studies have considered t...
متن کاملBiophysical interactions in the plankton: A cross-scale review
In plankton ecology, biological and physical dynamics are coupled, structuring how plankton interact with their environment and other organisms. This interdisciplinary field has progressed considerably over the recent past, due in large part to advances in technology that have improved our ability to observe plankton and their fluid environment simultaneously across multiple scales. Recent rese...

Models of marine ecosystem productivity rely on estimates of small-scale interactions, particularly those between copepods and their algal food sources. Rothschild and Osborn [Rothschild, B. J. & Osborn, T. R. (1988) J. Plankton Res. 10, 465-474], hypothesized that small-scale turbulence in aquatic systems increases the perceived abundance of prey to predators. We tested this hypothesis by expo...
متن کاملEffects of turbulence on the development of phytoplankton biomass and copepod populations in marine microcosms
Effects of turbulence on the dynamics of copepods as well as on the development of phytoplankton biomass were studied in 30 dm3 laboratory microcosms. Two experiments were carried out, with different successional stages of the plankton populations, using seawater from the Masnou nautical harbour, 20 km north of Barcelona. Two experimental conditions were established (stirred microcosms with cop...
متن کاملMicroscale Complexity in the Ocean: Turbulence, Intermittency and Plankton Life
This contribution reviews the nonlinear stochastic properties of turbulent velocity and passive scalar intermittent fluctuations in Eulerian and Lagrangian turbulence. These properties are illustrated with original data sets of (i) velocity fluctuations collected in the field and in the laboratory, and (ii) temperature, salinity and in vivo fluorescence (a proxy of phytoplankton biomass, i.e. u...
